In a season that saw Bill Belichick’s exit from the Patriots signal that New England’s empire has fallen once and for all, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has moved further up the list of the NFL’s all-time greats.

Mahomes set for yet another Super Bowl

At just 28, Mahomes will play in his fourth career Super Bowl when Kansas City face the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas on Sunday. No other quarterback in history has registered as many appearances in the NFL’s showpiece game at such an early age.

Mahomes is not only building the kind of resumé that will surely lead him to be inducted into the Hall of Fame; the Chiefs star is also on pace to surpass the achievements of the Patriots’ legendary quarterback, Tom Brady.

Let’s make one thing clear: Mahomes still has a way to go to match Brady’s feats. As things stand, however, the stats don’t lie.

Can Mahomes surpass Brady feats?

Mahomes has racked up a multiple major achievements in a shorter amount of time than Brady.

When the former Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers ace announced a year ago that he was calling time on his career at the age of 45, the general consensus seemed to be that surely no other QB would ever match his spectacular stats.

In a 23-year NFL career, Brady won seven Super Bowls - six with the Patriots, one with the Bucs - and threw for a league-record 89,241 yards and 649 touchdown passes.

Mahomes still isn’t close to equalling those figures, but year after year the Chiefs QB keeps on busting through ceilings at a startling pace.

“Tom’s a long ways away”

In his second road game in this season’s playoffs, Mahomes again led Kansas City to a victory that defied the pre-game predictions, as Andy Reid’s men saw off the Baltimore Ravens to win the AFC Championship Game and book yet another ticket to the Super Bowl.

Mahomes has become a familiar face in the NFL’s biggest games. In his six seasons as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback, he has appeared in the AFC title decider every year, winning the conference four times.

“I’m trying to catch Tom,” Mahomes said ahead of Kansas City’s Super Bowl LVII win over the Philadelphia Eagles last year. “But Tom’s a long ways away, you can ask me when I’m like 38…
