How long is QB Jimmy Garoppolo out? Who is his replacement?

The San Francisco 49ers lost their second quarterback of the season when Jimmy Garoppolo left the Week 13 game against the Dolphins with a foot injury.

At the end of the 2021 season, the San Francisco 49ers and their quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo were at a stalemate and they ended up keeping him on the team, but as their second string. Trey Lance was the no. 1 QB, but that was short-lived. Lance played just two games before suffering a season-ending ankle injury.

The Niners turned to Garoppolo, who proceeded to have one of his best seasons as quarterback for the team with 2,437 yards, 16 touchdowns, and just four interceptions in 11 games. However, he left the 49ers Week 13 game against the Dolphins with a foot injury that will see him miss the rest of the 2022 season. It may very well have been the last time we see Garoppolo play in a 49ers uniform.

How long will Jimmy Garoppolo be out?

Jimmy Garoppolo will not return to play in the NFL in the 2022 season. He is set to undergo season-ending foot surgery after suffering a few breaks in the game against the Dolphins on Sunday.

It’s not yet clear how serious the breaks are, but Garoppolo is likely to be okay to return to the field at the start of the 2023 season. Once he’s undergone the surgery, there will likely be a clearer timeline of his return to football.

Who will take over at quarterback for Garoppolo?

There was some talk about Trey Lance coming back after suffering an ankle injury in Week 2, but 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan quickly shut that down, ruling out Lance for the remainder of the 2022 season. That leaves rookie seventh-round pick Brock Purdy to lead the way for the Niners the rest of the season with Josh Johnson likely to sign as his backup and Jacob Easton remaining on the practice squad.

Who is Brock Purdy?

Brock Purdy, an Iowa State alum, was the dead last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, and he took over for Garoppolo on Sunday after he left with the injury. At that point, the Dolphins were up 7-3 and the 49ers chances of winning were looking grim. Luckily for them and for a surely nervous Purdy, though, the Niners are equipped with several offensive playmakers. Purdy walked right into the game and led the Niners to a touchdown to give them a 10-7 lead and they were never down again for the rest of the game. He finished with 210 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, and one interception to lead the 49ers to a 33-17 win. They maintain their top spot in the NFC West.

Purdy spent four years at Iowa State and there, he passed for a combined 12,170 yards and 81 touchdowns. He’s no novice, but he is a rookie, and he’s been thrust into a difficult situation in San Francisco. Next up, he’ll face Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“He’s been playing football longer than I’ve been alive,” the 22-year-old Purdy said of Brady. “Having the first start against the GOAT is pretty cool. I’ve just got to do my thing, be efficient and play football”.

Ladies and gentleman, we have an underdog to root for.
