SUPER BOWL 2024

How many times have the Kansas City Chiefs played in the Super Bowl?

They’ve done it again! The Kansas City Chiefs are back into the Super Bowl and will face the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday 11 February with murmurs of a dynasty being heard more and more in NFL circles. Victory is by no means guaranteed, the Niners coming into the game as the NFC’s number one seed, but with Mahomes dictating play, Kelce finding the space, and Reid on the sidelines, it’ll take a brave soul to bet too much money against them. Especially when you consider that they’re getting very used to making it to the conclusion of the season.

This will be the Chiefs’ sixth appearance in a Super Bowl - still someway short of the 11 featuring the Patriots - but it’s worth noting that it is their fourth in the last five years. Yeah, Brady’s bunch may see their record being closed in on soon. Of those six NFL finales, two victories are already in the bag, and another would take them alongside the Patriots, Steelers, Cowboys, Giants, Packers and the 49ers with at least three.

From their founding in 1960 as the Dallas Texans to their relocation to Kansas City in 1963 and their subsequent evolution into the formidable Chiefs - check out the origin of the name - the team has woven a rich tapestry of triumphs and challenges. Let’s take a trip down memory lane...

The Chiefs and the Super Bowl

AFL Dominance and Merger Era

Before entering the NFL in 1970, the Chiefs secured three AFL championships in 1962, 1966, and 1969. The 1969 victory was particularly historic as it marked the final AFL–NFL World Championship Game before the league merger took full effect.

Super Bowl I and the Green Bay challenge

In their illustrious 63-year history, the Chiefs have graced the Super Bowl stage four times, claiming victory on two occasions. Their inaugural appearance in Super Bowl I in 1967 saw them face the Green Bay Packers. Although they succumbed to a 35–10 defeat, it laid the foundation for the Chiefs’ Super Bowl journey

Super Bowl IV triumph

A defining moment unfolded in Super Bowl IV when the Chiefs triumphed against the Minnesota Vikings with a dominating 23–7 win. Quarterback Len Dawson’s stellar performance earned him the game’s Most Valuable Player title, and the Chiefs proudly became the second AFL team to conquer an NFL counterpart in the AFL–NFL World Championship Game.

Super Bowl LIV: The 50-year return

Fast forward to 2019, the Chiefs, after a remarkable regular season, secured their spot in Super Bowl LIV, marking their return after 50 years. Overcoming a ten-point deficit, they clinched a spectacular 31–20 victory against the San Francisco 49ers. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes emerged as the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player, ending the Chiefs’ Super Bowl drought.

Super Bowl LV: a setback

In 2021, the Chiefs, fueled by an impressive regular season, reached Super Bowl LV but faced a tough loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, falling short with a 9–31 score.

Super Bowl LVII glory

Undeterred, the Chiefs bounced back, clinching victory in Super Bowl LVII against the Philadelphia Eagles. Kicker Harrison Butker’s clutch field goal secured their third Super Bowl championship, with quarterback Patrick Mahomes leading the charge.

Super Bowl LVIII anticipation

As the Chiefs gear up for Super Bowl LVIII, the anticipation is palpable. With a streak of victories, including an impressive taking out of the Ravens, one questions arises - can we now speak of a Kansas dynasty? Whether or not Taylor Swift continues to serve as a good luck charm, the Chiefs’ journey through Super Bowl history is an exhilarating narrative of resilience, triumphs, and the pursuit of football greatness.
