After facing a 10-point deficit after the first half, the Kansas City Chiefs bounced back to conquer the Philadelphia Eagles, 38-35, to become champions of Super Bowl LVII. They will be awarded with the Lombardi trophy, championship rings, and a hefty sum of cash. Well, at least by average American standards. (The median U.S. household income in 2022 was estimated at $78,813 in October last year, according to Seeking Alpha.)

A bonus, win or lose

Both teams who reach the Super Bowl get paid for the game. Players on the losing team, Philadelphia, will receive $82,000, while Chiefs players will receive $75,000 more than their counterparts for a total of $157,000. For those with mega-contracts, this amount may not be considerable, but since the average NFL salary is around $2.7 million, those who have not been blessed with quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ $45 million annual salary will consider their Super Bowl earnings a significant windfall.

The Super Bowl players will also get to enjoy the money soon. The NFL’s bargaining agreement with the NFL Players Association states that they should receive their bonus within 15 days of the game.

The players don’t even need to have actually performed on the field to claim their check, although not everyone may get the full amount. Tenure counts, and if the athlete has only been on the team’s roster for less than three games before the Super Bowl, they can only collect half of the entire bonus.

Those who were dropped by their teams from the active and inactive lists because of injury could only be entitled to half or a quarter of the sum. The amount will depend on how many games they’ve played, the number of years they’ve been in the NFL, their contract, among other considerations.

Big-name players have provisions for big bonuses if they win the Super Bowl. As for those who don’t, they still have thousands of dollars with which to celebrate their win or soften the blow of their loss.
