Why are the Dallas Cowboys the most valuable franchise?
Why are they popular? How did Jerry Jones and his family build a fortune with the Cowboys?
No NFL franchise is near the $7.6 billion that the Dallas Cowboys are worth. The team will most likely lead rankings of the NFL’s most valued clubs for years to come. They will remain “America’s Team” for generations.
But why are they popular? How did Jerry Jones and his family build a fortune with the Cowboys?
Media rights agreements have increased throughout the NFL. Forbes estimates each club will get $220 million for media rights this season and $377 million in a decade. Thus, media revenue makes every NFL franchise worth over a billion dollars.
Forbes (August 2021) reports the Cowboys’ have over $800 million in sales and a $280 million operating income in addition to sponsorships totaling $200 million. Nobody in the NFL is near those numbers. After a pandemic, over one billion dollars in income is insane. Moreover, Forbes’s average value for an NFL club is at $3.5 billion.
What the the Cowboys cost to Jerry Jones?
The franchise cost Jones $140 million in 1989, and he would later brand the Cowboys “America’s Team,” attracting fans worldwide. Like the Yankees and Lakers, the Cowboys can be supported by anybody.
Members of the NFC East division, the five-time Super Bowl champions, became the most valuable sports team in the world in 2015- as the first sports team ever valued at $4 billion- and a few years later, they broke their previous record and jumped into the $5 billion ladder.
It does not seem like the growth in value by the Cowboys will slow down anytime soon. Even though Jerry jones is not foreign to controversy, it also doesn’t seem like he will sell the club. Despite fans imploring him to do so after such a long time without a ring.
