How much does Calais Campbell have left at 40? Ravens are about to find out in Year 19

The Baltimore Ravens are reuniting with defensive end Calais Campbell, who enters his 19th NFL season in 2026 at nearly 40 years old.

Update:

The Baltimore Ravens are bringing back a player who helped anchor their defense just a few seasons ago. A respected veteran whose presence in the locker room once carried as much weight as his play on the field. But this isn’t about nostalgia.

How much does Calais Campbell have left at 40?

The Ravens signed Calais Campbell to a one-year deal, and they did so as a team with legitimate expectations, not as a franchise looking to honor the past. Baltimore is heading into the 2026 season in win-now mode, and every roster decision is made with that mentality.

Campbell will turn 40 on September 1, placing him in rare territory for an NFL defensive lineman, particularly one still expected to contribute on a contending team. Longevity at that position is difficult enough. Sustained effectiveness this deep into a career is something else entirely.

And yet, the Ravens clearly believe there is still something left. The question is, how much?

During his previous stint in Baltimore from 2020 to 2022, Campbell proved to be more than just a veteran presence. He was productive, disruptive, and reliable, capable of impacting games both as a pass rusher and as a force against the run. But that version of Campbell doesn’t need to fully return for this move to work.

What Baltimore likely needs now is something more measured but still impactful, a rotational presence who can step into key situations, provide depth along the defensive line, and deliver in moments that matter most.

Even in a reduced role, however, production cannot be assumed. The NFL is unforgiving when it comes to age. Physical wear accumulates fast and recovery becomes more difficult with each passing season. For Campbell, the challenge isn’t just staying healthy, but maintaining the explosiveness and strength necessary to compete against players nearly two decades younger.

That’s the gamble. At the same time, it’s easy to understand why the Ravens are willing to take it. Campbell brings an uncommon level of experience, familiarity with the organization, and a reputation as one of the league’s most respected veterans. There is value in that.

Still, none of that replaces on-field impact. Baltimore didn’t bring Campbell back simply to mentor younger players or serve as a symbolic presence. The Ravens are betting that Calais Campbell still has something left to give. Soon enough, they (and everyone else) will find out exactly how much.
