From Pro Bowl safety to official Broncos fan: Justin Simmons embraces life after the NFL
Long-time Denver Broncos defensive cornerstone Justin Simmons announced his retirement, officially as a Bronco.

For most NFL players, retirement comes with either declining production, injuries piling up, or a final season spent fighting for one more roster spot. But for Justin Simmons, the ending looks different. The longtime Denver Broncos standout is stepping away from football not because he has to, but because he wants to.

From All-Pro to fan: Why Justin Simmons is walking away from the NFL at the height of his legacy
At 32, Simmons announced his retirement from the NFL after a career defined by consistency, leadership, and elite production in the secondary. A four-time All-Pro and one of the most respected defensive backs of his era, he leaves the game still widely regarded as one of the most reliable safeties in football.
“This is my home,” Simmons said while reflecting on his career with the Denver Broncos. “I’m always going to be a Bronco, and I’m always going to be a Broncos fan.”
Simmons spent the bulk of his NFL career as the defensive backbone of Denver’s secondary. Known for his intelligence, range, and ball-hawking instincts, he became a cornerstone of the Broncos’ defense for nearly a decade. After playing briefly with the Atlanta Falcons, he’ll officially retire as a Bronco.
“Being a Denver Bronco was more than just a team. It was my heart, my home and my story.”

He was durable, consistent, and trusted. Year after year, he remained one of the most dependable safeties in the league, earning multiple All-Pro selections and establishing himself as one of Denver’s key leaders both on and off the field.
“I want to be a fan”
Perhaps the most striking part of Simmons’ retirement reflections is how he describes his next chapter. He doesn’t talk about business ventures, coaching opportunities, or media roles, but fandom. When the Broncos return to action at Empower Field at Mile High this season, Simmons has no plans to watch from a suite or private box.
“I don’t want to go sit in a suite,” he said. “I want to sit as close as I can, maybe in the lower bowl, and cheer on the team.”
It’s a detail that has resonated strongly with fans because it breaks from the typical post-career path of professional athletes. Instead of maintaining distance from the game, Simmons is intentionally moving closer to it, but from the perspective of the crowd, not the field.
He even described wanting to experience the rituals he missed during his playing days - tailgates, pregame atmosphere, and the unpredictable energy of game day as a spectator.
A legacy in Denver
Simmons’ legacy in Denver is already locked into place. He was not just a statistical contributor but a defining presence in the Broncos’ defensive identity throughout his tenure. His leadership, consistency, and professionalism made him one of the franchise’s most trusted players during a transitional era.
He also earned respect beyond the field, with repeated recognition as a nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award, reflecting his work in the community and reputation as a model professional.
Now, instead of chasing interceptions, he’ll be watching them from the stands, a former captain becoming part of the crowd he once led.
