Browns vs Panthers: preseason Week 1 preview
In 2025, the Browns will be attempting to bounce back from their worst campaign in seven years, having finished with a 3-14 record last season. Cleveland last made it to the postseason in 2022, bowing out in the Wild Card round.
Meanwhile, the Panthers are now on a seven-season stretch without reaching the playoffs, and were only marginally better than Cleveland in 2024. Under Dave Canales, who was in his first campaign as a head coach in the NFL, Carolina went 5-12 in the regular season.
In a departure from Week 1 of the 2024 preseason, Canales has revealed that starters will be involved today - with the definite exception of cornerback Jaycee Horn, who was involved in a minor car accident on Wednesday.
As for the Browns, their chief team news is that head coach Kevin Stefanski, who is embarking on his seventh season in charge, is to hand rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders his Cleveland debut as a starter.
“[Sanders] is excited,” said Stefanski, per ClevelandBrowns.com’s Kelsey Russo. “And he knew he was going to play a good bit in these preseason games. The competitor in him is very excited.”
The Browns picked Sanders at No. 144 in April’s NFL Draft, after the former Jackson State and Colorado star failed to live up to pre-event projections that tipped him to be an opening-round selection.
