Jaguars vs Chiefs: Preview

Doug Pederson has taken the Jacksonville Jaguars further than they’ve gone in a long time and quarterback Trevor Lawrence has greatly improved under his leadership. And last week, they pulled off one of the NFL’s biggest-ever comebacks to beat the Los Angeles Chargers in the Wild Card Weekend.

The Jaguars have never won a Super Bowl and they are not going out without a fight, but the Chiefs will be a much tougher matchup on the road than the Chargers.

The Chiefs, on the other hand, won their last Super Bowl in just 2019 are the No. 1 seed in the AFC for the third time in five seasons. They have the best offense accross the board right now, whereas the Jaguars have one of the worse pass defenses in the league. With Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce in the lineup, that spells trouble for Jacksonville. Mahomes has racked up 5,250 passing yards this season, a career-high for him and fourth on the all-time single season passing yards list.

History between the coaches

The Jaguars’ coach Doug Pederson and Chiefs coach Andy Reid have actually worked together many times throughout their career, adding another element to the storylines heading into Saturday. In the 90s, Reid was the Tight Ends Assistant Offensive Line Coach and Quarterbacks Coach for the Green Bay Packers while Pederson played as backup quarterback on the team. When Reid became the Eagles head coach in 1999, he recruited Pederson for the starting quarterback position and he played nine games before being released in summer 2000.

In 2009, Reid hired Pederson as the Eagles Offensive Quality Control Coach and he by 2011, he was promoted to the Quarterbacks coach where he stayed for two years. Then in 2013, Reid became the head coach for the Kansas City Chiefs and hired Pederson as the Offensive Coordinator. He stayed in that role until 2015.

Pederson is now in his first year as head coach of the Jaguars and has taken them to the playoffs for the first time since 2017. Now, he will face Reid in the Divisional Round of the 2022 NFL playoffs as they both battle to make it to the Super Bowl on February 12.
