Update:

The Kansas City Chiefs are leaving Arrowhead Stadium, crossing the Kansas-Missouri state line to move into a new home with an estimated cost of $3 billion.

The announcement came on Monday afternoon, shortly after a council of Kansas lawmakers voted to allow STAR bonds to provide around 70% of the funding for the stadium project. Those bonds will be covered by state sales and liquor tax revenues from around the stadium site, plans suggest.

The Chiefs had initially looked into a large-scale renovation of Arrowhead, allowing them to remain at the iconic venue. However proposals involving a new domed stadium won out and the Chiefs will move to Kansas for the next stage of the team’s history.

“The location of Chiefs games will change,” Chiefs owner Clark Hunt said on Monday. “But some things won’t change. Our fans will still be the loudest in the NFL, our games will still be the best place in the world to tailgate, and our players and coaches will be ready to compete for championships, because on the field or off the field, we are big dreamers, and we’re ready for the next chapter.”

When did the Chiefs move to Arrowhead?

The Chiefs have played at Arrowhead Stadium since 1972. There have been a number of different iterations over the years with renovations to reflect the changing sports landscape. However there is a limit on the number of high-revenue luxury suites that the current stadium can accommodate and some areas are showing signs of wear and tear.

The addition of a retractable roof will make the new stadium a genuine all-year-round venue, allowing the Chiefs to host additional concerts and events, as well at NFL and college football games.

“Chiefs fans on both sides of the state line can tell you that the success we’ve enjoyed together has elevated the profile of the entire region,” Hunt said. “Sports are woven into the fabric of this community.”
