Las Vegas Raiders 16 vs 17 Los Angeles Rams summary: Mayfield makes Rams, debut stats, scores and highlights | NFL Week 14
It was a perfect start to Baker Mayfield’s era in Los Angeles and an ending fit for the big screen as the newest member of the Rams led his side to a sensational comeback win over the Las Vegas Raiders. Mayfield was the hero with 230 yards and a touchdown as the Rams won 17-16 in his LaLa Land debut.
Mayfield under center after two days
Mayfield had been in Los Angeles for a little more than 48 hours before lining up under center for the Rams on Thursday Night Football. In a script fit for Hollywood, the often-chastised former Panther quarterback made magic happen in his incredible premier at SoFi Stadium.
The Rams new QB1 arrived to LA on Tuesday shortly after new broke that he had been dealt to the NFC West side. He didn’t start the game, but he certainly finished it. John Wolford got the first series that went three and out shortly after watching the Raiders score a touchdown on their opening possession. Mayfield was put into the game by head coach Sean McVay on the very next drive.
Right from the start you could see the former Oklahoma Sooner connecting on passes we hadn’t seen him make all year. Perhaps there was a certain sort of freedom he was enjoying, perhaps it was just a wave of emotion from the last couple of days, but Mayfield was like a kid in the school yard running the offense sometimes having to improvise on roll outs or with scrambles.
Raiders red zone problems led to downfall
Vegas went down on their first drive and ran the ball down the Raiders throats. After nine rushes on an 11 play drive, Josh Jacobs punched in the first touchdown of the game less than six minutes in. It would be the last time the Raiders offense would see the end zone.
Las Vegas did scored on their first three possessions, but had to settle for field goals on each of their next two drives despite entering the red zone on both possessions. The Raiders went just 1-4 on red zone drives, and their inability to score touchdowns cost them the game in the end.
On his first possession Mayfield set up a field goal that would be the only points LA scored for the first 57 minutes of the game. The Rams had a chance to cut into the Las Vegas lead in the second quarter, but Cam Akers fumbled the ball as the LA was driving deep into LV territory and that let the air out of the tires at SoFi Stadium.
Carr’s pick before halftime turned game around
Up 13-3 Derek Carr and the Raiders would have a chance to add to their lead right before halftime, but the Vegas QB threw an interception in the end zone less than a minute before the half.
The Raiders offense would shut down after that. They gained a total of just 67 yards in the second half, and Carr passed for just 11 yards after the halftime break.
A scoreless third quarter would allow the Rams to continue to believe despite their offense coming to a stand still as well. They would punt twice and miss a field goal on their first three possessions, but after going down 16-3 with Dan Carlson’s third field goal of the game Mayfield and the Rams ignited the offense.
Mayfield leads comeback fit for Hollywood
Los Angeles went on a 17 play, nine minute drive that resulted in a touchdown when Cam Akers crashed into the end zone with just over three minutes to go in the fourth quarter. The Rams forced Vegas into a quick three and out, but they would have to go 98 yards in 1:45 with no timeouts after a fantastic 64 yard punt from AJ Cole.
Mayfield would make perfect throw after perfect throw as he hit receivers on the sidelines and stopped the clock. Even when he got sacked early in the drive, the Raiders bailed out when Jerry Tillery was called for unsportsmanlike conduct. Mayfield went 6/7 on his final drive and with 10 seconds to go found Van Jefferson on a 23 yard game winning touchdown to start the Mayfield Era off with a bang.
The Rams are technically still in the playoff picture at least for the time being, but with the loss the Raiders path to the post season gets awfully complicated in the AFC.
The Rams D forced Las Vegas into a three and out, but a great punt pinned the Rams back to the two yard line. With no timeouts and 1:45 on the clock Mayfield crafted a comeback for the ages and finished it with this 23 yard TD throw to Van Jefferson.
It took 17 plays and nine minutes, but the Rams punched the ball in for the first time to make it 16-10 with 3 minutes left in the game.
The throws were nice, and it was impressive that Mayfield could step in a take over an offense, but they still only had 3 points deep into the fourt quarter... That would change.
Mayfield didn't know a fraction of the Rams play book so they let him create off the boot legs and make decisions on the run.
Mayfield sat for the first possession, but came on for the second drive and looked comfortable from the start. He was connecting with his recievers on difficult timing throws that a guy on his second day with a team shouldn't be making.
The Raiders had their chance to bury the Rams at the end of the first half, but Derek Carr was pressured and his throw was popped in the air and fell to Ernest Jones in the end zone for the INT
Despite their red zone struggles, the Raiders scored on their first three possessions, and took the game by the horns after Akers coughed up the ball late in the second quarter as the Rams were marching down the field.
The Raiders got into the end zone on the opening drive of the game with this Josh Jacobs two yard TD, but would not get into the end zone again all night. Their red zone inefficency cost them at the end of the game after not being able to close out Baker Mayfield and the Rams.

Lights, camera, action in LA
The story has been the same since the Rams moved backed to LA. They came back to a town with a rich history of football, but many of it’s habitants have pledged their loyalty to other teams around the league. Even in their Super Bowl year, allegiances were divided in the SoFi Stadium stands as many away fans packed the house. This year, it’s been much of the same during the Rams dreadful season and and tonight there should be plenty of Raiders fans in attendance tonight.
Raiders back in LA
The Raiders played in Los Angeles for over a decade as the franchise relocated from Oakland to LA in 1982-94. They know this stadium well, but that’s from playing the other team in LA, the Chargers who are in their division. There is no doubt the Raiders faithful will show up in big numbers tonight to cheer on LV as they look to keep their slim playoff chances alive.
Rams last week
It’s been disappointment after disappointment this season for the Los Angeles Rams this season, but last week they looked like a team that had a sense of pride despite their shocking record. They may not have had Matthew Stafford, Cooper Kupp or Aaron Donald, but the rest of the cast gave the Seattle Seahawks all they could handle. They may have been beaten on a last minute TD by Geno Smith, but for the first time in a long time the Rams came out and competed.
Raiders last week
Once again it was Josh Jacobs carrying the Raiders to victory on the ground with a fantastic performance on the ground. He ran the ball 26 times for a total of 144 yards and a TD, and while Derek Carr didn’t have an outstanding game he made two big throws that made the difference in the game against the Chargers.
After the defense forced a fumble, Carr pitched a flea flicker to Devante Adams for a 31 yard TD, and on the next possession he connected with Adams again to go up 23-13 in the third quarter. LV’s defense hung on the rest of the way to secure their third win in a row.
We are live from Los Angeles
Hello everyone and welcome to Sofi Stadium, and I must say thanks for tuning in for this game that really doesn’t hold much weight when it comes to the playoff race. When the schedule makers set this game for Thursday Night, they probably thought this was going to be a blockbuster match up with tons of playoff implications on the line. The Super Bowl hangover is still lingering in LA, and while the Rams have not yet been eliminated from the post season, at 3-9 they will have to win out and need everything else to go perfectly. The Raiders have had a sudden resurgence after a terrible start to the season. They still have a long way to go, but their playoff chances look much more promising than the Rams’ chances.
Raiders vs. Rams
There is not a whole lot on the line tonight from Los Angeles as two teams with the slimmest of hopes to make the playoffs take the field at SoFi Stadium tonight. The Los Angeles Rams get set to host the Las Vegas Raiders to start Week 14 and AS English will be with you all night providing live stats, highlights, updates and analysis of tonight’s game from LA.
