Update:

The Detroit Lions are losing a key offensive piece for the upcoming NFL season after the announcement that team stalwart Frank Ragnow is retiring.

Ragnow was selected by the Lions with their first round pick at the 2018 NFL Draft and he spent his entire seven-year NFL career with the team. In May 2021 he signed a four-year contract extension worth $54 million, highlighting his importance to the team.

Last season he started in 16 regular season games and the Lions’ sole playoff game. On Monday June 2 he announced his decision to retire, citing his desire to "prioritize my health" and focus on his family.

His statement said: “These past couple of months have been very trying as I’ve come to the realization that my football journey is ending and I’m officially retiring from the NFL.

I’ve tried to convince myself that I’m feeling good but I’m not and it’s time to prioritize my health and my families future. I have given this team everything I have and I thought I had more to give, but the reality is I simply don’t.”

Since his debut in 2018 Ragnow had been a fan favorite for his incredible commitment and full-blooded style. However in recent years that combative style has seen him battle with countless injuries, suffering issues with his foot, pec, knee, groin and ankle. His tendency to play through those injuries earned him a fearsome reputation but it appears to be catching up with him now.

Speaking in February 2024 Lions general manager Brad Holmes was full of praise for the player but insisted that he would not try to force him to play on indefinitely.

“Ragnow, it’s only one of them on the planet, in my opinion,” Holmes said. “But I have so much respect for him and for everything that he goes through and fights through that I’m just respectful of his time and his thoughts.”

We’re not going to pressure him to do anything or make any moves. But the communication will be diligent. It’ll be thorough. It’ll be respectful.”
