Heading into this weekend’s Divisional round, the LA Rams have been one of the most impressive teams in the NFL playoffs so far. They torched the Minnesota Vikings in their first game of the postseason, cruising to a 27-9 victory on Monday, and will pose a challenge to any team in the league

Quarterback Matthew Stafford, now 36, provides experience and a sense of calm in the Rams offense and he boasts a stellar postseason record. Stafford could still pick up a second Super Bowl triumph late in his career but he could just as easily find himself out of contract after this weekend.

Last summer the Rams and Stafford agreed a major contract adjustment that sees Stafford give up all guaranteed payments for the 2025 and 2026 seasons, giving the Rams the option to cut him at the end of the current season. This essentially converted the remaining years of his deal into a one-year, $40 million contract that will be reassessed this summer.

What is Matthew Stafford’s salary with the Rams?

Stafford arrived in LA from the Detroit Lions in 2020 and found instant success, winning Super Bowl LVI the following season. He remains a top quarterback in terms of completion percentage and yards per game but he turns 37 in February, forcing the Rams to think cautiously about his future.

After that Super Bowl win Strafford signed a four-year extension with the Rams, totalling $160 million. Of that, $130 million is guaranteed money.

Figures published on Spotrac show that this year Stafford has a base salary of $23.5 million with a signing bonus of $12 million. As a result of the restructuring Stafford also nets a bonus of $4.16 million and an option bonus of $6.5 million. All that adds up to a total salary cap hit of $46.16 million, the third-highest in NFL this season. Kyler Murray of the Arizona Cardinals ($49.12 million) and Daniel Jones of the New York Giants ($47.86 million) are the only two with higher cap hits.

In theory, Sunday’s game could be Stafford’s final game for the LA Rams. But speaking to reporters ahead of the Eagles match-up, Stafford insisted that he’s relishing the challenge.

“Just try to go out there and be aggressive,” he said. “This time of year, it doesn’t really, reward you to be to be timid. Gotta go out there and make plays. Gotta go win games in the playoffs. Can’t just hope that things fall your way.”
