Buffalo Bills legendary player omitted from Wall of Fame in the new Highmark Stadium

One of the biggest names in Buffalo Bills history won’t be part of the franchise’s next chapter.

When the Bills open the new Highmark Stadium, O.J. Simpson will not be included on the team’s Wall of Fame displays, despite being the first player ever inducted and one of the most accomplished players to wear a Buffalo uniform.

Why is O.J. Simpson missing from the new Highmark Stadium?

The decision was confirmed by Bills chief operating officer Pete Guelli, who said that Simpson “is not a fit to display inside our new stadium and family circle.”

The Family Circle will be a public plaza outside the stadium featuring tributes to Bills legends alongside the venue’s iconic bison statues. While other Wall of Fame members will be recognized there or elsewhere in the stadium, Simpson will be omitted.

The move reflects how the organization now views one of the most complicated figures in NFL history.

Why was O.J. Simpson’s legacy so controversial?

From a football perspective, Simpson remains one of the greatest running backs ever. During nine seasons with Buffalo, he became the first player in NFL history to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a single season, reaching the milestone in just 14 games in 1973. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985.

His reputation changed dramatically after the 1994 killings of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.

Simpson was acquitted in the criminal trial the following year, but a civil jury later found him liable for the deaths and ordered him to pay $33.5 million in damages. In 2008, he was sentenced to prison for an armed robbery in Las Vegas, serving nearly nine years before his release. He died in 2024.

The Bills’ decision means the franchise’s first-ever Wall of Fame inductee will be the only member not carried over to the new Highmark Stadium.
