Update:

Just ahead of the 2024 NFL season, wide receiver Michael Gallup announced his retirement from professional football at the young age of 28. It was a shock at the time, as not only was he young, but he’d just finished OTAs and training camp with the Las Vegas Raiders, and had no history of serious health issues or injuries.

The most plausible reason for his retirement seemed to be that he was unsatisfied with having to compete for a WR3 position with the Raiders (behind DaVante Adams and Jakobi Meyers) after having spent six seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.

Michael Gallup unretiring in 2025

Fast forward to 2025, and it seems Gallup is ready to make a comeback, as NFL’s Ian Rapoport has reported that he is unretiring. On Friday, Gallup was released from the Raiders' reserve/retired list.

In April 2024, he’d signed a one-year contract worth up to $3 million with the Raiders before he announced his retirement. In his six-year career with the Cowboys, Gallup had 266 receptions for 3,744 yards and 21 touchdowns. He tore his ACL in the 2021 season, but Dallas still signed him to a five-year, $62.5 million contract extension for the 2022 season.

He couldn’t seem to get back to where he was before though, and the Cowboys released him in March 2024 in order to save money. Now it looks like he’s ready to try again.
