Mike McDaniel on the hot seat: This is who the Dolphins owner could replace him with

The Miami Dolphins finished last season at 8-9, failing to make it to the playoffs for the first time in three seasons. Now, they’re off to an 0-2 start after losing to the Colts and Patriots. They have a tough matchup coming up against the Buffalo Bills on Thursday, and head coach Mike McDaniel, who’s sitting on the hot seat, desperately needs a win.

It’s a simple formula, really.

Mike McDaniel coaching for his job?

Back-to-back losses to start the season has fueled speculation about McDaniel’s job security. And owner Stephen Ross is reportedly eyeing defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver as a potential replacement if the team’s struggles continue.

“Another thing that’s lingering here is the fact that his defensive coordinator, Anthony Weaver, is beloved inside that building and is seen by a lot of people as a future head coach,” Albert Breer said on “The Rich Eisen Show”.

“So if there comes a point where this really goes the wrong way, could Stephen Ross say I want to take a look at Anthony Weaver as my head coach? I think it could eventually get there.”

Weaver helped guide Miami’s defense to a top-10 finish last season, and though he doesn’t yet have head coaching experience, he has coached with several NFL teams including the Bills, Houston Texans, and Baltimore Ravens. McDaniel, once celebrated for leading the Dolphins to back-to-back playoff appearances, is now under pressure after their sluggish start. Upcoming games against the Bills and Jets could determine his future in Miami.
