Missouri or Kansas? Plans for the Chiefs and Royals’ stadiums are still up in the air in K.C.

With both states offering big money, Kansas City’s teams are weighing billion-dollar decisions as the clock keeps ticking.

Update:

Dorothy may have said there’s no place like her home in Kansas, but not everyone agrees that’s where to be. Indeed, the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals are staring at a fast-approaching ‘home’ deadline, and two states desperate to keep them put.

Missouri just passed a legislative package offering hundreds of millions in stadium subsidies, hoping to stop the teams from jumping the state line. The bill, signed Saturday by Gov. Mike Kehoe, covers up to 50% of stadium costs plus $50 million in tax credits per team. It’s a direct response to Kansas’ aggressive move last year to greenlight bonds for 70% of construction costs if the teams relocate.

Move of renovate?

The leases at the current Truman Sports Complex expire in 2031. The Royals want a new home entirely, scrapping Kauffman Stadium for a fresh site. The Chiefs prefer a $1.15 billion renovation of Arrowhead.

Voters in Jackson County, Missouri, already rejected one tax proposal for the stadiums. That opened the door for Kansas, which now looms as a serious option – especially since the Royals have already secured a mortgage on land across the border.

Both franchises say they’ll decide by June 30. Missouri’s late legislative push was seen as progress by the teams but not yet a deal closer.

And while officials rally to fund stadium dreams, some Missourians – still reeling from the deadly St. Louis tornado in May – wonder if the state’s priorities are lining up.
