The New England Patriots have announced their new head coach, just a week after parting ways with Jerod Mayo. The AFC East franchise revealed that Mike Vrabel, a three-time Super Bowl champion as a player for the Patriots, will take over the role. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Vrabel becomes the 16th head coach in the franchise’s history. He brings six seasons of NFL head coaching experience, having led the Tennessee Titans from 2018 to 2023, where he compiled a 54-45 record. Most recently, he served as a personnel consultant for the Cleveland Browns during the current season.

The Patriots’ new head coach was highly sought after, with interviews from multiple teams, including the New York Jets and Chicago Bears. However, Vrabel was considered the frontrunner to return to New England due to his strong ties to the franchise, where he spent eight seasons as a player.

Vrabel’s coaching background is rooted in defense. His coaching career began at the collegiate level in 2011 as Ohio State’s linebackers coach, followed by two years as the Buckeyes' defensive line coach. In the NFL, he started as the Houston Texans' linebackers coach in 2014 and was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2017 before taking on the head coaching role with the Titans.

As a player, Vrabel was instrumental in the Patriots' victories in Super Bowl XXXVI, XXXVIII, and XXXIX.

Other Candidates Interviewed by the Patriots

Before signing Vrabel, the Patriots conducted several interviews with other candidates for the head coaching position. One notable contender was Ben Johnson, the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator, who has been credited with creating one of the league’s most dynamic offenses this season.

Other candidates included Byron Leftwich, the former offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who helped the team win Super Bowl LV, and Pep Hamilton, who has led the Houston Texans' offense since 2022.
