The Super Bowl is just two days away and we are counting down the minutes to kickoff between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs! The Chiefs and Eagles headed to Phoenix this week and practices are in full-swing.

In the Divisional Round of the playoffs when the Chiefs faced the Niners, Mahomes suffered from an unfortunate injury - a high ankle sprain that saw him sit out most of the second quarter. Fortunately for the Chiefs, they were able to pull off the win and Mahomes has since been in recovery, but is not yet at 100%.

Mahomes injury status ahead of Super Bowl looking positive

Despite that, there has been good news surrounding Mahomes’ recovery process. He’s been working on rehabbing it non-stop and has been a full participant in practice this week.

“He’s an absolute warrior. People don’t understand how truly tough he is,” said Chiefs senior assistant and quarterbacks coach Matt Nagy. “There’s tough and then there’s Patrick tough. He’s tough as nails, and I just think it’s special to see and we’re lucky to have him.”

Mahomes has said he does not expect the injury to limit him and the two weeks off before the Super Bowl has done wonders to help him recover. Still, he says he won’t know exactly how close to (or far from) 100% he really is until he’s out there on the field on Super Bowl Sunday.

“I definitely move around better than I was moving last week or two weeks ago,” said Maomes. “So, it’s just trying to continue to get the treatment and the rehab and get it as close to 100% and then rely on some adrenaline to let me do a little bit extra when I’m on the field.

Fortunately for him, the Chiefs have done a fantastic job at protecting him all season, ranking fifth in adjusted sack rate.

“He came back in the game, and we knew we had to step up our game a little bit more, elevate our level of play to make sure to keep him upright,” said Chiefs offensive lineman Andrew Wylie. “We try to do that every week no matter what, keep him upright, keep his jersey clean, so a big emphasis on that going into this week.”

It won’t be easy, though. The Eagles rank first in adjusted ack rate with 70 total sacks this season. Mahomes is more than capable of scrambling and gaining yards, but in the Super Bowl, the receivers will need to be ready too once Mahomes gets out of the pocket. But even without his perfect health and mobility, Mahomes was able to make plays against both the Jaguars and Bengals on the injured ankle. With these two weeks of recuperation, adding into the fact that Mahomes is so mentally tough as well, there shouldn’t be too much cause for concern heading into the big game. It’s just a matter of not re-aggravating it now.
