Update:

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has already accomplished a lot in eight years in the NFL as he prepares to bring his team to their fourth Super Bowl victory in as many years, and third consecutive. The Chiefs face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday at Ceasars Superdome in New Orleans.

And while he’s focused on the game this weekend, Mahomes has also spoken about his plans beyond this season.

Mahomes' plans for 2028 Olympics

In the 2028 Summer Olympics, which will take place in Los Angeles, flag football will be introduced as a sport. As soon as that news broke, many wondered which NFL stars, if any, might participate in the Olympic sport.

As for Mahomes, he’s definitely interested, even if his gaining a spot would mean taking away the spot of a specialist in flag football. His stance is simple.

“I’m very neutral on this. I think just let the best man win,” said Mahomes. “If that’s the flag football guys or that’s the NFL guys. Let them got out there and train for it.”

Mahomes also mentioned that his age could come into play, as he would be 32 years old by then. If he’s not feeling up for playing, he has a different idea.

“I might be a little old at that point for flag football,” Mahomes said. “So, I don’t know if I can run around like that, but, I can coach. If they let me coach, I might get to be a coach trying to win a gold medal.”

Even if he is fit to play, however, Mahomes admitted that he’s not a shoe-in, as playing flag football is a much different dynamic to that of the NFL, and would take some getting used to.

“That’s definitely going to be a challenge,” said Mahomes. “It’s not like flag football is easy. I mean, those guys are out there working on their craft every single year. I think receivers and defensive backs will be a little bit easier, but, if you play quarterback and some of those bigger positions, man, those guys move around with a lot of speed and they gotta make plays happen.”

At 32 years old, Mahomes is likely to still be playing football with the Chiefs though. Most NFL quarterbacks retire between 35 and 40 years old, and Mahomes is under a contract with the Chiefs until 2031, when he will be 35 years old.
