Saints HC Kellen Moore reveals what he’s looking for to decide on who the starting quarterback will be
The New Orleans Saints’ quarterback battle is one of the most intriguing in the NFL ahead of the 2025 season and coach Kellen Moore is nearing a decision.
The 2025 NFL season is quickly approaching, and for the New Orleans Saints, these last two preseason games will carry a lot of weight. After Derek Carr announced his retirement, the Saints were left with three quarterbacks to battle it out for the starting role: Jake Haener, Spencer Rattler, and rookie Tyler Shough.
Saints’ quarterback race down to the wire
Last week, the Saints started Rattler in their preseason opener against the Los Angeles Chargers, but all three QBs played for at least a bit during the game. Rattler completed 7-of-11 passes for 53 yards, Haener completed 5-of-8 for 41 yards and a touchdown, and Shough completed 15-of-22 for 165 yards and one touchdown and one interception.
While none of those performances really stand out, apparently head coach Kellen Moore is nearing a decision, but he says that this week’s preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday will have a big impact on his final call.
“It will be a big part. Obviously each and every day you continue to build and I think we’ll just keep rotating these guys,” said Moore on a recent appearance on “The Up & Adams Show”. “Giving these guys different opportunities and ultimate got to make a decision.”
“We’re close. We’re close, we’ll get there. These guys are doing awesome. I think it’s just been really balanced,” Moore went on. “It’s been a really balanced offseason for those guys. They’ve had great moments. They all have lessons to be learned and that’s part of being young quarterbacks in this league. They’ve done a nice job, we’re excited to let it play out.”
For Moore, it all boils down to one thing: consistency.
The Saints need one man to step up and take the lead and show up day in and day out. Whichever player that ends up being by the end of the Saints’ preseason will be their starter for the 2025 season. New Orleans will open the season at home on Sunday, September 7 when they host the Arizona Cardinals.
