Update:

The long wait is finally over. Shedeur Sanders was picked at the 2025 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns and he expressed his delight in the aftermath of a few days that have surely taken their toll.

A star quarterback at Colorado, Sanders went into the Draft as many people’s number 1 pick at QB, but after the first and second days went by, eyebrows were raised.

Reports citing concerns over the amount of sacks he takes as well as his attitude during interviews was given as a possible reason behind the snub and in the end, five quarterbacks were taken over him in the first three rounds: Ward, Jaxson Dart, Tyler Shough, Jalen Milroe, and Dillon Gabriel. Then the Cleveland Browns, after passing on Sanders four times, including twice in four picks in the second round, took the plunge; he was selected in the fifth round, at 144 overall.

‘For me, it was just playing quarterback’

I would say I’m extremely grateful for the opportunity throughout everything,” a grateful Sanders told local media after he was selected. “I don’t ever focus on the negative or even think about the negative because the positive happened so fast and it’s a change of emotions.

Sanders, son of Hall of Fame cornerback and Colorado coach Deion Sanders, continued his positive message of hard work and effort: “For me, it was just playing quarterback. That’s what it’s about. You can’t be up, too low or anything. You got to be able to celebrate. And when we score a touchdown, we celebrate for a little bit. Now, it’s back to, time to work, it’s time to go.”

Browns general manager Andrew Berry explained the decision to eventually go for Sanders to reporters: “we talk oftentimes about quarterback being the most important position in the sport. We obviously spent a lot of time with Shedeur throughout the process. He’s highly accurate, can play well from the pocket, very productive college career. And we felt like it wasn’t necessarily the plan going into the weekend to select two quarterbacks, but we do believe in best player available, we do believe in positional value. We didn’t necessarily expect him to be available in the fifth round."

“So, we love adding competition to every position room and adding him to compete with guys that are already in there, we felt like that was the appropriate thing to do”, he concluded.
