Former Kansas City Chiefs assistant, and current head coach Andy Reid’s son, Britt Reid was sentenced to 3 years in prison Tuesday afternoon for a drunk driving accident resulted in serious injuries to a five year old girl.

The young victim, Ariel Young, suffered traumatic brain injuries after the February 2021 crash. It was a long day as the 5-year-old was in the court house today and even fell asleep while awaiting sentencing.

The former assistant coach pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated causing serious injury in September. While the injuries Ariel sustained were serious they were deemed non life-threatening.

Reid caused “a lot of harm” to Young family

The court heard a statement Ariel’s mother, Felicia Miller, read by the prosecutor. In it she explained how Ariel’s life has changed since the accident. She now wears glasses, may need leg braces, and is in special education classes because it takes her longer to process information.

After both parties had the opportunity to speak, the sentence was revealed. In announcing his decision, the judge cited that Reid had caused “a lot of harm to Ariel and her family.” However, the victims were not satisfied.

“The victims of this crime are outraged the Defendant was not sentenced to the maximum sentence allowable by law,” attorney Tom Porto, who represented the family, said in a statement. “No amount of prison time will ever be enough to punish the Defendant for the pain and suffering he caused this family and the ongoing difficulties that Ariel will continue to endure for the rest of her life. She will endure. She will strive and she will thrive. She is Ariel strong.”
