The Kansas City Chiefs are set to face off against the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl this Sunday, February 12 after the two top seeds won their conference championships.

The Chiefs and Eagles have now arrived in Phoenix, Arizona for Super Bowl week and the first injury reports have been released. The good news is, there have been lots of improvements on both sides since the bye week injury report last week.

Will Mahomes play in the Super Bowl?

While Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes went into the NFC Championship game at Lincoln Financial Field battling through an ankle injury he suffered in the divisional-round victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars, he was still able to deliver the key plays during the game against the Bengals.

The bye week and lots of rehab efforts have been very beneficial for the quarterback. Andy Reid told reporters that he’s not at 100% yet, Mahomes says he’s “definitely in a better spot” than he was for the AFC title game. He said he does not expect to be limited by the sprain on Sunday and that he will likely continue treatments until Sunday’s kickoff.

Chiefs Injury report

  • QB Patrick Mahomes (ankle) - Full Participant
  • WR JuJu Smith-Schuster (knee) - Full Participant
  • WR Kadarius Toney (ankle/hamstring) - Limited Participant
  • RB Jerick McKinnon (ankles) - Full Participant
  • RB Isiah Pacheco (wrist) - Full Participant
  • LB Willie Gray Jr. (shoulder) - Full Participant
  • RG Trey Smith (ankle) - Full Participant

The Chiefs are in way better shape than they were last week, with Kadarius Toney listed as the only limited participant in practice on Wednesday. Toney is “definitely playing” on Sunday though, so his limited practice could just be a measure of caution.

Will Hurts play in the Super Bowl?

Jalen Hurts missed two games late in the regular season with a shoulder injury, but that does not seem to be an issue anymore and didn’t seem to affect him in the playoffs either. The 24-year-old, however, is a finalist along with Mahomes for AP NFL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year.

All eyes are on Hurts as he goes after a Super Bowl win becoming the fourth Black quarterback with a Vince Lombardi Trophy, joining Doug Williams, Mahomes, and Russell Wilson.

Eagles injury report

  • OL Landon Dickerson (elbow) - Full Participant
  • OT Lane Johnson (groin/rest) - Limited Participant
  • C Cam Jurgens (hip/rest) - Limited Participant
  • CB Avonte Maddox (toe/rest) - Limited Participant
  • DE Robert Quinn (foot) - Full Participant

The bye week did the Eagles well, too. All of these players were non-participants last week, so limited and full is an improvement.

First black QBs to face off in Super Bowl

If both Mahomes and Hurts play on February 12, they will be the first Black QBs to face off in a Super Bowl.

And honestly, we can’t wait.
