Update:

With Super Bowl LX coming up this Sunday, Seattle Seahawks defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence is once again in the spotlight, but not just for his performance on the field. In his first season with Seattle, he’s heading to the Super Bowl, which has brought back into memory the candid remarks he made when he left the Dallas Cowboys last offseason.

From Dallas to the Super Bowl: DeMarcus Lawrence opens up on his decision

Lawrence, who spent 11 seasons with the Cowboys, resurfaced in media discussions this week after comments he made about his reasons for leaving Dallas and his desire to compete for a Super Bowl title. In the interview that went viral when he signed with the Seahawks, Lawrence was asked why he chose to leave the only franchise he’d ever known.

“Dallas is my home. I made my home there, my family lives there. I’m forever going to be there,” he said. “But I know for sure I’m not going to win a Super Bowl there.”

That blunt assessment sparked widespread reaction, particularly among Cowboys fans, because Dallas hasn’t played in a Super Bowl since the 1995 season. And Lawrence, having spent over a decade playing a significant role on the team, believes they’re not winning a title any time soon and that he wouldn’t get a chance to compete for one either if he stayed.

Now, in his first season with Seattle, he has that opportunity. Lawrence has since explained that his comments weren’t meant to bash his former team, but rather to reflect the reality of his career timeline. During media day this week, the veteran reiterated why he felt it was time to move on.

“Just being real about the situation, understanding that football is not for long for any player and understanding my window of opportunity is closing … I don’t have long to play this game. I have to win now,” Lawrence said.

When asked why he couldn’t win in Dallas, Lawrence said bluntly, “That’s for them to find out.” And when the reporter reminded him that he said he isn’t winning there, Lawerence smiled and said, “Yeah, cause I’m winning here. You can’t win in two places.”

Indeed, he is winning there. Lawrence is just one victory away from a Super Bowl ring with the Seahawks. Seattle’s defense has been a league-leader this season, and Lawrence has played a crucial role in a unit that helped the team reach the NFL’s biggest stage.

Lawrence’s original comments ignited a bit of drama at the time. Then-Cowboys teammate Micah Parsons publicly reacted, calling Lawrence’s remarks “clown s***” on social media, which led to a brief exchange between the two players. Cowboys legend Michael Irvin also weighed in, arguing that Lawrence had been part of Dallas’ struggles and suggesting his critique overlooked his own contributions during his time in Dallas.

Despite the backlash, Lawrence has kept his focus on the opportunity with Seattle. Rather than stoking old rivalries, he’s praised his Seahawks teammates and has emphasized that winning now was his priority, something he felt was within reach after joining a franchise on the rise.

Whether Cowboys fans agree with his assessment or not, Lawrence’s decision has unquestionably brought him closer to the elusive ring he’s chased throughout his career.
