Baltimore’s new star running back is closing in on a career milestone that dates back to his high school days.
I’m sure they still tell stories down in Yulee, Florida, about the kid who rumbled through Friday night defenses like he was playing against scarecrows. That kid was Derrick Henry. Now, more than a decade later, the Baltimore Ravens’ running back is still piling up yards, and he’s on the verge of something special.
How many rushing yards does Derrick Henry have?
I’ll be honest, I didn’t spot this. Instead it was NFL analyst Marcus Mosher who pointed it out on X that Henry now has 11,423 career rushing yards in the professional league. Pro Football Ref actually has him at 11,592 following the opening game of the new season, one that ended in a one point loss to the Bills after a crazy Q4. His legendary high school total was 12,124 yards, meaning Henry is roughly 600 yards away (523 it would actually seem) from matching what he did as a teenager. Wow!
To put this in perspective, Henry has averaged over 1,000 rushing yards per season in the NFL. If he stays healthy, he could pass his high school mark before Thanksgiving.
It’s obviously not an NFL record to celebrate but it shows a dominance across the levels, something not everyone, even the greats, have managed. He went from breaking Florida’s prep rushing records, to winning the Heisman Trophy at Alabama, to becoming a two-time NFL rushing leader with the Tennessee Titans.
He’s a 31-year-old Raven now. Let’s see how just how far he can fly... I mean, rush.
