The dangerous ranking that Mahomes or Hurts could join
While Patrick Mahomes can solidify his position among the Super Bowl greats, he and Jalen Hurts are also flirting with an unwanted piece of history.

Whichever team wins Super Bowl LIX this weekend, the defeated quarterback will earn unwanted membership to a club of multiple title game losers.
The Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Hurts and the Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes both have one Super Bowl loss on their NFL resumés so far.
Hurts was beaten in his only career appearance in the showpiece event, when the Eagles went down 38-35 to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII two years ago.
Mahomes, meanwhile, suffered defeat in Super Bowl LV, as Kansas City lost 31-9 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020.

Which NFL quarterbacks have started more than one Super Bowl defeat?
A loss on Sunday would make either Hurts or Mahomes the ninth quarterback in NFL history to have started and suffered defeat in more than one Super Bowl.
This year’s losing QB will join four men - Peyton Manning, Kurt Warner, Roger Staubach and Craig Morton - on two career defeats as a Super Bowl starter.
Three quarterbacks have lost the game three times as a starter - Tom Brady, John Elway and Frank Tarkenton - while former Buffalo Bills favorite Jim Kelly holds the record for the most Super Bowl defeats by a starting signal caller.
Kelly was beaten in the Super Bowl four times with the Bills, during a sequence in which Buffalo lost the NFL title game every year between 1990 and 1993.

Which QB has the most Super Bowl wins?
Unlike Hurts, however, Mahomes also has the opportunity to further cement his place among the Super Bowl’s most successful quarterbacks.
Aside from the Chiefs’ defeat to the Bucs four years ago, Mahomes has appeared in three other championship games since joining the NFL in 2017: in 2019, 2022 and 2023, the 29-year-old led the Chiefs to the Vince Lombardi Trophy, scooping the MVP award on all three occasions.
With a fourth career Super Bowl victory in New Orleans this weekend, Mahomes would draw level with Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana as the event’s second-most-decorated quarterback.
But the former Texas Tech star would remain well adrift of the QB with the most wins in the championship game. That status is held by Brady, who enjoyed seven victories in his 10 Super Bowl starts.
Indeed, Brady’s haul of championship rings makes him the Super Bowl’s most successful player in any position.
Super Bowl LIX - when, where, how to watch?
The Chiefs and the Eagles face off on Sunday, February 9, 2025, at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana. Kick-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT.
