Browns

The incredible stat that may favor Cleveland against the Steelers: this is their streak at home in Thursday Night Football

The 2-8 Cleveland Browns don’t have a lot going for them as they prepare to face the 8-2 Pittsburgh Steelers, but they do have one thing in their favor.

Why is it known as the Turnpike Rivalry?

The Cleveland Browns aren’t doing so hot this year. Even before losing starting quarterback Deshaun Watson to injury, the team was struggling. Now, in Week12, they are entering their Thursday Night Football game against AFC North rivals Pittsburgh Steelers at 2-8 and last in the division.

The Steelers, on the other hand, are entering tonight’s match on the opposite end of that, at 8-2 and first place in the division, and on a five-game winning streak. They’ve found success with both Justin Fields and Russell Wilson under center and have become serious contenders for the postseason.

There’s not a lot working in Cleveland’s favor tonight, but there is one thing.

The one stat that might favor the Browns against the Steelers

Tonight’s TNF game will be played in Cleveland’s territory, at Huntington Bank Field. Interestingly, the Browns have won eight straight home games on Thursdays (dating all the way back to 2009).

Three of those wins came against the Steelers, in 2009, 2019, and 2022. In fact, their all-time record at home on Thursdays is 9-2.

The Steelers stat that also favors the Browns

But wait...there’s more. Although most of the odds are still in Pittsburgh’s favor, there’s one more odd that isn’t.

In contrast to the Browns' TNF home stats, the Steelers actually have a negative stat playing Thursday games on the road under head coach Mike Tomlin. Since Tomlin took over in 2007, the Steelers are 1-7 in TNF games on the road, including those three losses to the Browns I mentioned above. In fact, since 1980, the Steelers are 0-8 against AFC North opponents on the road on Thursdays. That is quite the contrast to their 22-game winning streak in home games on Monday Night Football.

So, while most of the odds don’t favor the Browns...at least two of them do. You can follow along with the Browns vs Steelers game with our live text coverage brought to you by Dane Arlauckas right here on AS USA.
