These are the top 5 longest ever national anthems at the Super Bowl: How long will it take Jon Batiste?

Batiste is to perform the “Star-Spangled Banner” ahead of Super Bowl LIX, which sees the Chiefs take on the Eagles in New Orleans.

If Jon Batiste is to beat the record for the longest rendition of a U.S. national anthem at the Super Bowl, he will have to depart from his previous form as the singer of the “Star-Spangled Banner” at top sporting events.

How long have Batiste’s previous national anthems lasted?

A native of Louisiana, Batiste was in November announced as the Super Bowl organizers’ choice to sing the anthem ahead of today’s matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, who are to face off for the Vince Lombardi Trophy at New Orleans’ Caesars Superdome.

Batiste’s resumé already features performances of the national anthem at the 2017 NBA All-Star Game and on the opening night of tennis’s 2017 U.S. Open.

He is reported to have spent one minute and 19 seconds over his All-Star Game rendition, before delivering a longer U.S. Open performance that lasted one minute and 45 seconds.

Who sang the longest Super Bowl national anthem?

According to DraftKings Network, the 17-time Grammy winner Alicia Keys holds the record for the lengthiest national anthem Super Bowl.

Before Super Bowl XLVII in February 2013, Keys stretched the “Star-Spangled Banner” out for an unmatched two minutes and 36 seconds - just beating the record previously set by Natalie Cole in January 1994, ahead of Super Bowl XXVIII. Cole took two minutes and 33 seconds, DraftKings Network says.

Batiste will therefore have to go nearly a minute longer than his U.S. Open performance if he’s to break Keys’ record.

Indeed, the Oscar recipient and seven-time Grammy winner appears better placed to chase the record for the NFL title game’s shortest ever national anthem.

Per DrafKings Network, that mark is currently in the possession of Neil Diamond, who was finished in one minute and two seconds at Super Bowl XXI, in January 1987.

Top 5 longest Super Bowl national anthems:

1. Alicia Keys (2013): 2:36
2. Natalie Cole (1994): 2:33
3. Lady Gaga (2016): 2:22
4. Jazmine Sullivan & Eric Church (2021): 2:16
5. Jennifer Hudson (2009): 2:10
