The San Francisco 49ers advanced to Super Bowl LVIII after incredibly overcoming a 17-point halftime deficit against the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship Game held at Levi’s Stadium. The visitors experienced two turnovers on downs in the host’s territory that could have translated into six crucial points in a match that concluded 34-31.

Brady “would have taken the points”

Advanced statistics suggested that attempting a first and ten was more effective than kicking a field goal. However, for Tom Brady, the legendary quarterback and future FOX analyst, taking the points was more important. During his appearance on the Let’s Go podcast, Brady stated that he would have opted for a field goal instead of going for it on fourth down.

“They were aggressive all year, when you are and it doesn’t work, obviously, it will hurt you. It hurt them yesterday,” said Brady. “I would have taken the points, I’ve been in those situations, and I think it was an opportunity to put pressure on the 49ers to make big plays.”

The first turnover on downs occurred in the third quarter when they still held a 14-point lead, facing fourth down and two to go from the Niners’ 28-yard line. Jared Goff attempted a pass to Josh Reynolds, but the wide receiver failed to make the catch.

The second loss happened in the final period, with a fourth and three on San Francisco’s 30-yard line. The quarterback’s pass did not find the hands of Amon-Ra St. Brown.

Tom Brady’s fourth-down numbers as a player

Given the criticism, some may look at Brady’s record in similar situations.

He is, however, arguably the greatest quarterback in NFL history, so he’s in a fairly strong position to hand out his views. And Brady’s plays on fourth down have solidified his legendary status. According to Statmuse, Brady attempted 159 passes on fourth down throughout his career, accumulating 953 yards with 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. He completed 91 throws and was sacked six times.
