Update:

It was a four month saga that took Cleveland and the rest of the NFL world by storm. After a draft day disappointment, plenty of neigh sayers hoping on the bandwagon, and a preseason of nonstop coveage, Shedeur Sanders is officially a Cleveland Brown.

Sanders survives cutdown day

There was plenty of speculation as to whether or not the son of former Dallas Cowboy legend Deion Sanders would make an NFL roster after falling to the fifth round of the draft. He had a great debut against the Carolina Panthers, missed the Browns second game against the Philadelphia Eagles with an oblique injury, and struggled in the preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams.

In the end, the former Colorado QB officially made the Browns 53 man roster on Tuesday. He survived a quarterback competitions that consisted of five other QBs, including veteran Joe Flacco and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. Flacco was named the started before the third preseason game, and after preseason wrapped up Gabriel was named the second string guy. That means Sanders will be third on the depth chart, and there are some things that he is going to have to sort out if and when he gets a chance to take snaps on Sundays.

According to Pro Football Focus, Sanders’ average time to throw was the highest of any quarterback in the preseason since that stat started to be tracked back in 2013. He had a throw time of 3.96 seconds, which can get you in plenty of trouble when you have to deal with the speed and strength of the NFL.

A tale of two games

This became evident in the second game Sanders played. He went just 3/6 for 14 yards and was sacked five time against the Rams. Many criticized his tendency to hold on to the ball for way too long, which was a concern for a lot of teams heading into the draft.

Sanders did look fantastic in his debut against the Carolina Panthers despite holding on to the ball a bit too long from time to time. He went 14/23 for 138 yards and 2 TDs and had people ready to crown him the QB1 after just a couple of series as a pro.

The first part of the job is done for Shedeur. Before anything else, he had to make the team. Now it’s time for him to sit back and study the game and wait for his chance to shine in Cleveland.
