It’s been a historic week in Washington DC. Not only is there a new commander-in-chief, the Washington Commanders find themselves just one game away from a first Super Bowl appearance since 1991.

Little was expected of the Commanders this season but the arrival of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels has catapulted the team into championship contention, leading them through a tough postseason schedule.

Having knocked out the No. 1 seed Buffalo Bills in the Divisional round, the Commanders visit Philadelphia to take on the Eagles this weekend. It’s a journey that will be familiar for Commanders owner Josh Harris, who just happens to own a stake in Philly’s rich sporting history.

Which US teams does Josh Harris own?

American investor Josh Harris was the head of a group that paid $6.05 billion to purchase the Washington Commanders in 2023, the most expensive sports team acquisition of all time. However that was not his first forray into the world of professional sports.

Having largely focused on private equity and finance during the early parts of his career, Harris opted for a move into sports and became co-owner of the Philadelphia 76ers in 2011. He formed an investment group with Blackstone executive David Blitzer that paid $280 million for the team.

Shortly after, in 2013, the Harris-Blitzer double act moved into hockey with the purchase of the New Jersey Devils. They paid $320 million for the team. A decade later, it was valued by Sportico at $1.17 billion.

This weekend Harris' Commanders will travel to Philadelphia, home of the 76ers, with a spot in the Super Bowl on the line. Harris hasn’t found success with the 76ers during more than a decade in control of the team. If his Commanders rock up and dump the Eagles from the playoffs, he may soon find himself very unpopular with Philly sport fans.
