What can we make of Trey Lance’s IG post about former 49ers GM Ran Carthon who is now with the Titans?

What can we make of the 49ers player’s recent post? Was it an indication that he’s got a move to Tennessee in the works, or was it him simply wishing his former GM good luck with a new team?

After being acquired as the marquee quarterback of the franchise, Lance has seen himself fall down the pecking order as a result of injury and then the unexpected emergence of a true star in the team’s third string QB. Does the signal caller have a future with the team? That’s anyone’s guess at this point.

Trey Lance’s curious tweet comes after Titans hire former 49ers GM, Ran Carthon

As you may have seen already, the Titans hired a new general manager this week to replace Jon Robinson and it was none other than 49ers executive, Ran Carthon. While the news in itself would have likely turned heads, the real eye-opener was a social media post by 49ers quarterback, Trey Lance, just moments after the hiring was announced. Indeed, Lance posted a rather cryptic message to his Instagram story, with three “fingers crossed” emojis attached to a picture of Carthan. Was it a thinly veiled “come get me” request? That’s anyone’s guess, but what we can say is that since he was sideline by injury back in Week 2 of the NFL regular season, Lance’s future with the franchise has become increasingly more unclear, due to the performances of rookie Brock Purdy down the stretch.

To be clear, this isn’t the first time that Lance has wished former teammates or colleagues well through social media. With that in mind, it could be argued that the aforementioned emojis are simply his way of expressing his hope that Carthon does well in his new environment. On the other hand, there’s also an argument to be made for the idea that Lance could very well be trying to place pressure on the franchise, by suggesting that he’d like to join Cathan at the Titans, or even a step further, a direct plea to Carthan to get to work on bringing him to Tennessee.

What’s Trey Lance’s scenario in San Francico?

Here’s the thing: It was only two years ago, that the 49ers traded up to land Lance with the No.3 overall pick in the NFL Draft, which is to say it seems highly unlikely that after paying such a heavy price to land the QB, they’d just let him go so quickly. Yet, as we said before, things have changed in San Francisco since he got injured. Backup Jimmy Garoppolo, who also went down injured is now set to hit free agency. Then, there is ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ himself, Brock Purdy. Selected as the 262nd overall pick in last year’s NFL Draft - that’s the last pick overall - Purdy has played like anything but what one would expect from such a player. That’s to say, he’s played like a star and his 6-0 record, including the playoffs has definitely proven that. The third string rookie QB looks set to secure the starting spot for the next campaign barring an absolute collapse in the upcoming Divisional Round against the Dallas Cowboys. Ultimately, there’s no way of telling at this time what Lance’s intentions are, but as always, we’d advise that you watch this space.

What about the Tennessee Titans

If there’s one thing that seems to add an element of intrigue to the scenario, it’s that the The Titans are potentially going to be on the lookout for a new QB. At the moment, starter, Ryan Tannehill may well be set to be axed on the grounds of the salary cap. Between his expensive contract and the fact that the Titans really only have Joshua Dobbs now as another QB, it would appear there is a hole that needs filling. Indeed, one can imagine that’s part of the reason why Carthan contracted to help in the front office. This after all, is the man who essentially oversaw the move for Lance. Remember what we told you about this space.
