The highest individual distinction that a player can achieve in the NFL is the MVP award, which has been handed out every year since 1957. The MVP award has been bestowed on 67 occasions (in 1997 and 2003 two players shared the honor), with the Green Bay Packers and Indianapolis Colts leading the all-time list.

Green Bay has the highest number of MVPs in NFL history with 10. Of those ten awards, four have gone to Aaron Rodgers (who is the reigning most valuable player in the league), Brett Favre added three during his illustrious career and Bart Starr, Jim Taylor and Paul Hornung each have one top their names.

The Colts have racked up nine MVPs during franchise history. Peyton Manning holds the NFL MVP record with five awards, four of which he won while in Indianapolis and he added another in Denver. Johnny Unitas earned three at the Colts with Earl Morrall and Bert Jones each winning one.

The 49ers complete the podium with five MVP awards. Joe Montana (2) and Steve Young (2) combined for four honors while John Brodie was voted MVP in 1970.

The Cleveland Browns and the LA Rams are joint-fourth on the all-time list with four MVPs each, although in the case of the Browns only one of those awards came after the merger between the NFL and the AFL in 1966 (Brian Sipe in 1980). Prior to the union of the two leagues, Jim Brown won three between 1957 and 1965.

NFL teams without an MVP

Although the award has been presented for 65 consecutive seasons, six franchises have never had a player who has won an MVP: the Jaguars, Buccaneers, Saints, Cardinals, Jets and Texans.
