Who will sing the national anthem in the Jets - 49ers Monday Night Football season opener?
The Philadelphia vocal harmony group Boyz II Men has social media abuzz with the news that they will sing the national anthem on Monday Night Football.
The 1990’s were a decade of musical diversity. A huge range of styles and talents occupied the charts in that époque, and none were bigger than Philadelphia a cappella group Boyz II Men. They ruled the airwaves as the decade dawned, rising out of the new jack swing sound of the late ‘80s.
After a 21-year hiatus, original member Michael McCary has rejoined the group and there is now a buzz on social media surrounding the news that they will perform the national anthem at the opening Monday Night Football game of the 2024 season between the New York Jets and the San Francisco 49ers.
Much of the buzz is around their 2018 performance of the anthem at the Atlanta Falcons vs Philadelphia Eagles game, which is still seen as one of the best performances of our nation’s hymn ever televised.
And that is not their only foray into performing the Star Spangled Banner. They have also performed it at the first game in Jacksonville Jaguars history back in 1995, as well as at the 2020 Green Bay Packers vs San Francisco 49ers NFC Championship Game. Just two years ago, they brought their version of the anthem to the NCAA, performing it at the Fiesta Bowl.
Whether you are an old-school fan of new jack swing, or just appreciate a solid a cappella rendition of a timeless classic, Monday Night Football’s national anthem will certainly join that list of great performances by Boyz II Men.
