Why isn’t Stefon Diggs playing for the Texans against the Chargers in the Wild Card game?
Diggs has been out of action since October. We look at how Houston will line up with two wide receivers on injured reserve.
Houston head into the postseason with two of their wide receivers on injured reserve. Veteran WR Stefon Diggs' season came to an end in October and his backup Tank Dell entered the sickbay as the regular season was coming to a close.
What injury did Stefon Diggs suffer?
Diggs suffered a non-contact injury to his right knee at the end of the third quarter of the Week 8 matchup against the Colts. Tests revealed a tear to the anterior cruciate ligament, effectively ending his season. Before his injury, Diggs had 47 catches for 496 yards and three touchdowns in eight games.
Diggs, who joined the Texans on a one-year deal in April 2024, will enter free agency in March.
Tank Dell is also on IR. He dislocated his left knee while catching a touchdown pass in the team’s 27-19 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 16. “He dislocated the knee, he tore the ACL, other things there he’ll have to get repaired. So he’ll be out for the year,” Coach DeMeco Ryans said.
Houston’s wide receiver options
With Diggs and Dell out, Houston claimed Diontae Johnson off waivers from Baltimore at the end of December. Johnson and Nico Collins are Ryans' options for today’s Wild Card clash against the Chargers.
Collins has had injury problems of his own this season - he was out for six weeks after suffering a hamstring injury in the 23-20 win over Buffalo. Nevertheless, he became Houston’s first wide receiver to post back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons since Brandin Cooks in 2021. Collins has 68 passes for 1,006 yards and seven touchdowns while averaging 14.8 yards per catch.
What time does Chargers - Texans start?
The 2025 NFL Wild Card game between the Los Angeles Chargers and the Houston Texans will be played on Saturday 11 January at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas with kick off scheduled for 4:30 p.m. ET / 1:30 p.m. PT.
