Will Jalen Hurts play for the Eagles vs Cowboys in Week 17? NFL injury update

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts suffered a concussion last week and his status heading into their Week 17 game against the Cowboys is still in question.

The Philadelphia Eagles have had a fantastic season. They’re heading into Week 17 at 12-3, second in the NFC seeding, and first in the NFC East. They can clinch their spot atop the NFC East this week with a win (or tie) over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. Even if they lose, a Washington Commanders loss or tie to the Atlanta Falcons would seal the division win for the Eagles as well.

Obviously, the Eagles would prefer to get there with a win, but unfortunately for them, it seems unlikely that they will have their starting quarterback back in time for Sunday’s game.

Jalen Hurts' injury status for Week 17

During the first quarter of the Eagles’ game against the Commanders last week, Hurts hit his head hard against the turf at the end of a run play. He made two separate trips to the medical tent before finally being ruled out of the game and put into the concussion protocol.

The Eagles had a walkthrough on Tuesday this week and did not hold a practice on Wednesday since it was Christmas Day, but they still had to release a practice report. On it, Hurts was listed as a non-participant. In the early portion of practice which was open to the media on Thursday, Hurts was not at practice.

Head coach Nick Sirianni said that there is still not enough information to rule out Hurts just yet.

“We got a plan of what we want to do,” Sirianni said. “And we’ll see how today goes and how warmups go and how individual goes and then into 7-on-7 and team.”

Despite Sirianni’s evasiveness, it seems highly unlikely that Hurts will clear the concussion protocol in time to play against the Cowboys on Sunday, even if he does return to practice.

The team will release another injury report this afternoon.

Will Kenny Pickett play if Hurts is out?

Backup quarterback Kenny Pickett replaced Hurts after he left last week’s game. He completed 14 of 24 passes for 143 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The Commanders won the game in the final seconds.

During the game, Pickett also suffered an injury, to his ribs. He had to get X-rays after the game, but he said he wasn’t worried about his status for Week 17. On Wednesday’s estimated practice report, Pickett was listed as a limited participant. On Thursday morning, Pickett practiced with extra padding around his midsection and said he should be good to go for Sunday.

The Eagles also brought quarterback Ian Book to the practice squad this morning for more insurance, which also seems like a bad sign for Hurts’ status on Sunday. Book was part of the Eagles' team in 2022 and will now serve as the fourth-string behind Tanner McKee, who has yet to play in a regular season game with Philly.
