Russell Wilson will see action for the first time in a Pittsburgh Steelers uniform in the second week of the preseason. Head coach Mike Tomlin said the veteran quarterback will start against the Buffalo Bills “if he doesn’t have any setbacks.”

“Russ is scheduled to participate if he doesn’t have any setbacks,” Tomlin said. “It’s been a good week, he’s participated in all the practices. With each passing day and Denver Broncos players, he’s having fewer issues.”

Former Seattle and Denver Broncos players suffered a calf injury during pre-training camp conditioning drills. As a result, Justin Fields was the starter against the Houston Texans.

The North Carolina State graduate is a 12-year veteran with nine Pro Bowl invitations. Wilson has thrown for 43,653 yards, 334 touchdowns, and 106 interceptions in his career.

During the preseason, most veterans with roster spots secured tend to rest and see little game action. However, Tomlin hopes to increase the load on his starting players in the second preseason game.

The first team, offense and defense, played two series last week,” the coach said. “But this week things can change based on what we see, if they are effective and productive. Now we will go with a four-series mentality.”

After facing the Bills, the Steelers will finish the preseason by visiting Ford Field to face the Detroit Lions on August 28. Their first regular season game will be against the Atlanta Falcons on September 8 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
