Carlos Alcaraz to play doubles with Rafael Nadal at 2024 Olympics: have they ever teamed together?
The current French Open champion will team with the record winner at Roland-Garros for Spain in Paris this summer.
The Spanish Tennis Federation has confirmed that recently crowned French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz will team up with the legendary Rafael Nadal in the men’s doubles tournament at the 2024 Olympic Games, to be held in Paris between 26 July and 11 August.
The two players had previously signalled their desire to line up alongside one another, although there had been no confirmation that would be the case until team captain David Ferrer’s official announcement on Wednesday.
Alcaraz and Nadal will compete in both the men’s singles and men’s doubles, with the former taking part in the Olympics for the first very time.
What is Nadal’s record at the Olympic Games?
The latter won the gold medal in the singles event in Beijing in 2008 and triumphed in the doubles tournament alongside Marc López in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
Despite their mutual admiration for one another, the Spanish duo have never played tournament doubles alongside one another.
There had been suggestions that could happen prior to the French Open but Nadal’s comeback from injury coincided with Alcaraz suffering an arm issue at the Madrid Open, forcing them to shelve any plans.
Will the 2024 Olympic tennis tournament be played on clay?
For the first time since 1992 Games in Barcelona, the Olympic tennis tournament will take place on clay at Roland-Garros, which should work in Spain’s favour. As well as boasting the reigning French Open champion, they will also have the record 14-time winner on their team.
