LeBron James is the first male basketball player to be named as flagbearer for the United States at the Olympic Games. The Team USA star will be one of two American flagbearers at Friday’s Opening Ceremony in Paris.

The 39-year-old was nominated by teammate Steph Curry and LeBron came out on top in a vote from all US athletes representing the team at this summer’s Games.

“It’s an incredible honor to represent the United States on this global stage, especially in a moment that can bring the whole world together,” LeBron James wrote in a statement.

“For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything to not only myself, but to my family, all the kids in my hometown, my teammates, fellow Olympians and so many people across the country with big aspirations. Sports have the power to bring us all together, and I’m proud to be a part of this important moment.”

Who else has been flagbearer for the USA at the Olympics?

Every four years one male and one female athlete is chosen as flagbearer for the United States at the Olympics Games’ Opening Ceremony. The Games starts with a procession as each of the teams, led by the two flagbearers, make their entrance and wave to the crowd.

Lebron’s female co-waver will be named on Tuesday. Here’s a look back at the US flagbearers since the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.

USA Olympics Games flagbearers

  • Tokyo 2020 - Sue Bird (Basketball), Eddy Alvarez (Baseball and Speed Skating)
  • Rio 2016 - Michael Phelps (Swimming), Simone Biles (Athletics)
  • London 2012 - Mariel Zagunis (Fencing), Bryshon Nellum (Athletics)
  • Beijing 2008 - Lopez Lomong (Atheltics), Khatuna Lorig (Archery)
  • Athens 2004 - Dawn Staley (Basketball), Mia Hamm (Soccer)

“Being selected by your teammates to carry the flag is a tremendous honor — and a testament to LeBron’s passion for Team USA and his dedication to his sport,” said Sarah Hirshland, CEO of the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

In Paris, for the first time ever, the Opening Ceremony will not be held in the stadium. This summer’s Games will see athletes make their entrance as part of a vast flotilla of boats sailing down the iconic River Seine in the heart of the French capital. Officials estimate that around 320,000 fans will be able to see the spectacle from the river bank, with a billion more around the world watching on at home.
