LIV golfers Carlos Ortiz and Abraham Ancer: Mexico’s representatives at the 2024 Olympics in Paris
The official list for the 2024 Olympic Games includes the 60 best-ranked players, and among them, there are two representatives from Mexico.
As the Paris 2024 Olympic Games are underway, golf enthusiasts can once again look forward to witnessing the world’s best golfers compete on the international stage. Following the rules set since Rio 2016, the official list for Paris 2024 comprises the top 60 players based on the Olympic Golf Ranking. Notably, Mexico will be represented by Abraham Ancer and Carlos Ortiz, two golfers competing on the alternative golf circuit - LIV Golf.
The National Olympic Committees (NOCs) have exclusive authority over the representation of their countries at the Olympic Games. Therefore, each athlete’s participation in the Paris Games will depend on their NOC’s selection to represent their delegation at Paris 2024.
How did Ortiz and Ancer qualify for the Olympic golf tournament?
Ancer and Ortiz are scheduled to compete at the Le Golf National “Albatros” course from August 1 to 4. During this time, they will be going against the World Golf Ranking No. 1, Scottie Scheffler, the current champion of The Masters. The United States will be the only country with four representatives due to Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Wyndham Clark, and Collin Morikawa ranking within the Top 15.
The IOC allows a total of 60 players to participate. Each country can have only two representatives, except if four golfers of the same nationality are within the Top 15, as is the case for the United States. Consequently, Carlos Ortiz and Abraham Ancer have secured their spots, as they are ranked 51st and 57th (World Golf Ranking), respectively.
Ortiz won the International Series in Oman, an Asian Tour event, at the end of February. He also recently claimed top honors on the LIV Tour by finishing first at the Houston tournament. Meanwhile, Ancer has already won in the 2024 LIV season by placing himself at the top of the Hong Kong circuit. He previously won the gold medal at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, qualifying him as a continental champion.
