Update:

La Rojita lost in a shock result to a spirited Egypt side, who overcame them 2-1 at Matmut Atlantique stadium, Bordeaux.

Ahead of the final group game, Spain already knew that they would be through, having won 2 games from 2 so far.

However, perhaps they did not anticipate a hugely motivated Egypt side, who saw Ibrahim Adel score once in each half before the side played the clock down to perfection. Spain’s second-half changes failed to ignite things on the pitch, or at least until Samu Omorodion scored the 2-1 for the Spaniards in the 90th minute. The 10 added minutes were thrilling, and despite being close to drawing the game, Egypt’s defense contained their rivals’ attacks. What’s more, an impressive display from Spain’s goalkeeper, Alejandro Iturbe, prevented the rival from scoring the third goal. As a result, the Africans finished top of Group C.

Who do Spain play in the Olympic Games soccer quarterfinal?

Given the loss, Spain will finish second in the group, and will play Japan in the next round. A win would have seen them finish top and consequently avoid the in-form Asian side, but it was not to be.

Japan, at the time of writing, have won 2 from 2 and look in fantastic form. They have scored 6 goals and are yet to concede at all.

Along with Japan, it is Paraguay with 3 points in the driving seat as they sit in second place, ahead of Mali and Israel, both on a single point.
