Unbelievable Winter Olympics result: Two skiers tie not once, but twice, to share silver
In a stunning result, two Olympic skiers recorded the exact same time in the same event twice to share the silver medal in the women’s giant slalom.

Italian ski star Federica Brignone sealed an unforgettable moment at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo, capturing gold in the women’s giant slalom, and making history alongside a stunning shared silver medal result that thrilled ski fans worldwide.

Brignone’s golden double
At 35, Brignone completed a remarkable gold medal double, adding the giant slalom title to the super-G title she won earlier in the Games. Her winning combined time was 2:13.50, finishing 0.62 seconds ahead of her nearest competitors.
This victory cements Brignone’s place in Alpine skiing history, particularly after a career-threatening leg injury that required multiple surgeries and months of rehabilitation.
A one-in-a-million tie for silver
In a result seldom seen even at the Olympic level, Sweden’s Sara Hector and Norway’s Thea Louise Stjernesund recorded exactly the same times in both runs of the giant slalom, resulting in a shared silver medal behind Brignone.

Both recorded a combined time of 2:14.12, down to the hundredth of a second. The timing match across two separate runs is extremely rare. Even veteran ski commentators called it “one in a million.” The pair embraced and celebrated together, embodying sportsmanship and mutual respect in a sport known for intense rivalries.

This giant slalom result is notable for multiple reasons. Federica Brignone is now among the few athletes to win two individual Alpine skiing golds at a single Olympics. The identical-time silver medals shows just how fine the margins are at the elite level and how, on any given day, a hundredth of a second can change history. And the camaraderie between Hector and Stjernesund was widely praised as a lovely contrast to high-stakes competition, resonating with fans worldwide.
While Brignone, Hector, and Stjernesund dominated the medals, other high-profile skiers saw mixed results. Mikaela Shiffrin (USA), one of the sport’s most decorated athletes, finished 11th, continuing a challenge for her first Olympic medal since 2018. Italy’s Lara Della Mea narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth by mere hundredths of a second.
