Nielsen Gracenote Sports, a renowned statistical analysis company, has released its predictions for the upcoming Olympic Games. According to the forecast, the USA Olympic team is expected to win 123 medals, including 39 golds. This would make it the eighth consecutive time that the USA won the most medals at the Summer Olympics, based on Gracenote’s ranking system based on the total number of medals won.

The U.S. is projected to top the Virtual Medal Table for the Summer Games in Paris. According to Gracenote’s current projection, the U.S. is expected to win 123 medals, 10 more than they won in the 2021 games. If they can achieve this number of medals, it will be the U.S.’s best medal performance in the last forty years.

China is expected to secure second place with 89 medals, of which 35 would be gold medals. In the previous Olympic Games held in Tokyo three years ago, both teams secured the top two positions. Based on the results that Chinese athletes are recording, the current predictions from Gracenote indicate that China will perform similarly to three years ago. Diving, shooting, swimming, weightlifting, table tennis, artistic gymnastics, and badminton are China’s main sports for winning medals.

The ranking system used by Gracenote is based on the number of total medals won, although some other rankings rely on gold medals won. Besides the USA and China, Great Britain (66-13), France (55-28), Australia (50-13), Japan (49-13), Italy (47-12), the Netherlands (38-18), Germany (36-9) and South Korea (24-9) are expected to follow as the top medal winners.

However, there is a possibility that Russian and Belarusian athletes may not participate in the team sports events. Due to the war in Ukraine, their athletes have been absent from most international competitions for the past two years. Gracenote says that if they participate in the upcoming games, their impact on the medal rankings is difficult to predict. Russian and Belarusian athletes will still compete as neutrals in individual sports without national symbols and anthems at the upcoming Games.
