Women’s marathon at the 2024 Olympics in Paris: schedule, TV channel and how to watch it online
The women’s marathon kick-starts the final day of the Paris 2024 Olympics with the race scheduled for an 8am (local time) start.
Commencing on the final day of the 2024 Paris Olympics, the women’s marathon starts at 08:00 am (local time) / 02:00 am (ET) and is set to link the Hôtel de Ville in Paris to Versailles. The race will also pass through nine of the Île-de-France region’s districts, iconic parks and forests, and the majestic Palace of Versailles site: Boulogne-Billancourt, Sèvres, Ville d’Avray, Versailles, Viroflay, Chaville, Meudon and Issy-les-Moulineaux.
The challenging route is nowhere near flat: it will include a 436m climb and 438m descent, with the maximum gradient on the route sitting at a hamstring-burning 13.5%.
Paris breaks with tradition
The 2024 Olympics also sees a buck in tradition with the women’s race rather than that of the men, will have the honor of closing out the Olympic track meet with the traditional 26.2-mile run.
Organizers of the Paris Games are using the Sunday women’s marathon as another way to highlight the conquering of a long-sought benchmark at the Olympics as these are the first Summer Games to have an equal number of men and women competing.
Marathon contenders
Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa, the world record holder, is running on Sunday but there are concerns about her ability to handle the hilly run with compatriots Megertu Alemu and Amane Beriso Shankule other runners to keep an eye on.
Kenya have the reigning Olympic Champion, Peres Jepchirchir, who ran 2:16 to win the 2024 London Marathon in action with Hellen Obiri and Sharon Lokedi another duo of Kenyans worth tracking.
The Netherlands’ Sifan Hassan will run Sunday’s marathon after competing in the 10,000m on Friday night and having won bronze in the 5000m earlier in the week but questions abound regarding her ability to handle the hectic schedule.
