Will Zalatoris and Matt Fitzpatrick hold a share of the lead going into the final round of the 2022 US Open while defending champion Jon Rahm is a shot off the pace after a frustrating finish.

Zalatoris, who lost in a three-hole playoff at the PGA Championship in May, posted a three-under 67 at the Country Club to move to four under alongside Fitzpatrick, that ran off three birdies over his last five holes for a 68.

Meanwhile, Rahm, who is looking to become just the fourth player since World War II to win back-to-back US Open titles, grabbed the solo lead but he did double-bogey his final hole to end up in third position going into the final day of the competition.

Strong wind affected several players

The Spaniard, who was among eight players who had at least a share of the lead at some point in a breezy day at the Country Club, said it was getting dark and he didn’t notice his ball sitting down in the sand. “I have 18 holes, and I’m only one shot back. That’s the important thing”.

Seven of the top 12 players going into Saturday made at least one double bogey.

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler remains within two of the lead alongside Keegan Bradley and Adam Hadwin, while Rory McIlroy heads into Sunday with a round of 73. “It was one of the toughest days on a golf course I’ve had in a long time”, said Rors.

Two-time major champion Collin Morikawa, who shared the 36-hole lead with Joel Dahmen, had double bogeys on the seventh and 13th holes to finish with a 77.
