There are eight players within two shots at the top of the leader board, setting up a thrilling final day of The Open at Royal Troon Golf Club.

American Billy Horschel leads the way after three days of action at Royal Troon Golf Club, holding a one-shot advantage ahead of the all-important final day of The Open.

The tricky conditions continued on Saturday with fierce winds and persistent rain, making life difficult for the world’s top players. Horschel shot a 69, leaving him on -4 with one round remaining.

Behind him are six players level on -3: Thriston Lawrence, Sam Burns, Russell Henley, Xander Schauffele, Justin Rose and Dan Brown. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is one shot further back on -2 and remains within striking distance of top spot.

The story of the tournament so far has been the incredible form of Brown, the 29-year-old Englishman making his major championship debut. He led after the first round at Royal Troon and, although he’s dropped back slightly, is still targeting a historic triumph.

Who missed the cut at the 2024 British Open?

Rory McIlroy, who was Open champion in 2014, conceded that the windy conditions in Troon “got the better of me” after he missed the six-over cut line on Friday, finishing day two on +11,

On Friday the Northern Irishman explained: “I didn’t adapt well at all to that left-to-right wind yesterday on the back nine, and then this afternoon going out in that gusty wind on the front, as I said, it got the better of me, and I felt pretty uncomfortable over a few shots.”

Other big names who won’t be involved over the weekend include US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau (+9), world No. 4 Ludvig Aberg (+9), world No. 5 Wyndham Clark (+16), world No. 7 Viktor Hovland (+10), world No. 12 Tommy Fleetwood (+9) and three-time Open winner Tiger Woods (+14).
