After finishing in a tie for eighth at last month’s PGA Championship in Louisville, where his tournament was thrown into disarray by his arrest on assault charges, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the bookmakers’ favourite to win his second major of the season at this week’s US Open Championship.

Can Scheffler add US Open to honours list?

According to betting information compiled by Oddschecker, Scheffler is rated at between +280 and +333 to claim victory on course No. 2 at Pinehurst Resort, where the 124th US Open kicks off on Thursday. The 2024 Masters champion, whose charges have since been dropped, leads the betting ahead of Xander Schauffele (+900 to +1100), who won the first major of his career at the PGA Championship. Rory McIlory, winner of the US Open in 2011, is the third favourite (+1100 to +1200).

Scheffler, Schauffele and McIlroy have been placed together in a big-name grouping for rounds one and two in Pinehurst, North Carolina, where there are also threesomes that include more than one previous US Open winner. 2022 champion Matt Fitzpatrick and three-time victor Tiger Woods will play in the same group, while Webb Simpson, Justin Rose and Gary Woodland - winners in 2012, 2013 and 2019, respectively - will all tee off together. Jordan Spieth (2015) and Jon Rahm (2021) had been drawn in another group featuring multiple former champions, but Rahm has now pulled out of the event due to a foot infection. The Spaniard has been replaced in the 156-man field by Jackson Suber.

Low expectations surround 2023 champ Clark

The US Open’s defending champion, Wyndham Clark, is well down the list of tournament favourites this year. Winner by one shot at the Los Angeles Country Club 12 months ago, Clark (+6600 to +7500) has struggled for form in recent times, missing the cut at the PGA Championship. On days one and two, Clark is to complete his rounds alongside Brian Harman and Nick Dunlap.

“I know that it sounds like low expectations for the week, but honestly I’d love to just gain some momentum for the rest of the season,” Clark said ahead of round one, in quotes published on the US Open’s official website. “I’d like to hit some good shots, have some good up and downs, make some key putts throughout the week, and play four solid rounds. That’s what I’d love to do.”
