Capitals Captain Alex Ovechkin just placed himself on the list of hockey’s top three all-time goal scorers after his hat trick vs the Blackhawks
On Tuesday, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin scored the 800th goal of his NHL career with a hat trick vs the Chicago Blackhawks that ended 7-3.
Ovechkin became the third NHL player- behind Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe- to reach the milestone and the first to do it with a single franchise.
“This ... it’s huge. It’s huge for hockey, it’s huge for the organization,” said the 37-year-old following the victory.
“Soon as it happened, kind of relief.” “Kind of happiness in general.”
Ovechkin indexed his historic moment in the third period of the 1,305th game of his career. It was also the left winger’s 20th goal this season, giving him an 18th consecutive campaign with at least 20. Only Brendan Shanahan (19 straight) and Howe (22) have achieved the same feat.
