As Formula 1 heads into its seventh race of the season, Aston Martin is finally rolling out the first major upgrades for the AMR25. So far, the team has struggled, with Lance Stroll mustering just 14 points—often under exceptional circumstances—and Fernando Alonso yet to score.

Aston Martin continue to tweak the AMR25

This weekend, the team will introduce a new floor and aerodynamic modifications to the car’s bodywork. “We’re bringing a new floor and top bodywork. With the current aerodynamic regulations, the floor is the biggest contributor to downforce and the top bodywork helps with the delivery of good quality airflow to the key areas of the floor, so the two work hand in hand. What we’re expecting from the package is an improvement in aerodynamic load and an improvement in the consistency of that load on the car,” team principal Andy Cowell explained.

The team’s work plan for Friday’s practice sessions at Imola is clear: “We will run one car with the new spec and the other car with the existing spec at the start of the event and make a cross-car evaluation. It’s beneficial to run two cars with different specs so we get a direct comparison with identical track conditions,” Cowell added.

Despite their struggles, there is optimism in the Aston Martin camp. “Although we’re not regularly picking points up at the moment, if we improve by one per cent we would be in contention for trophiesthat’s how fine the margins are, but that’s also far easier said than done,“ Cowell said.

The innovation required to close that small gap requires all of us to be exceptionally inquisitive, digging into the fine detail and looking for anomalies compared with expectation – and they’re not going to be big, glaring anomalies, they’re going to be fine little bits of detail. We’re digging into that to understand what’s going on, to then come up with ideas that will enable the car to go faster around the racetrack”

Aston Martin plan further upgrades as F1 season progresses

The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix marks Aston Martin’s first major updates of 2025, but the team has more in store. As previously reported by AS, aerodynamic components tailored for high-downforce conditions will debut at next week’s Monaco Grand Prix. Additionally, front wing modifications will be introduced at the Spanish Grand Prix, coinciding with the FIA’s review of part elasticity and stricter flexibility regulations.

All teams will need to make adjustments to comply, and some—like Red Bull—hope this technical directive will shake up the current grid order. McLaren, believed to hold an advantage under current regulations, could see the gap reduced.

Aston Martin will also roll out a final upgrade package later in the summer. However, the priority right now is ensuring this weekend’s Emilia Romagna GP upgrades are effective—unlike some components from 2023 and 2024 that failed to deliver the desired results.
